Lance Briggs is retired now, but the former Bears linebacker knows the 12 seasons he spent in the NFL didn’t do his brain’s health any good.
In a recent video Briggs posted to Sqor, he opened up about the dangers of chronic traumatic encephalopathy, commonly known as CTE, a progressive degenerative brain disease. More information about CTE has been made public in recent years, and Briggs is worried he might suffer from it at some point.
“CTE affects guys in a different way, and you start seeing it even in the practice of football. You get worried. I get concerned for myself. Even though I’ve never had any suicidal thoughts or anything like that, for it to happen to some great men and great football players, I know I can’t separate myself from that crowd,” Briggs said. “The good thing for me is, at least I don’t feel like I’m at a level where it’s dangerous or harmful for myself. But the stories, the things that you hear, that stuff can be scary.”
Stewart, who was an All-Star in 1989, was part of three World Series championship teams. He was on the Dodgers team that won it all in 1981 and then won a pair of titles with the A’s in 1989 and 1993. He joined the front office of the A’s in 1996 as an assistant to then-A’s GM Sandy Alderson, and held a similar position with the Padres.
Following coaching stints with the Padres and Brewers, he worked for a sports management agency and then became the Diamondbacks GM in 2014, a position he held until his firing in October of 2016.
MLB commissioner Rob Manfred said earlier this week he believes both groups are strong and will have sufficient financial resources to complete the sale and run the team effectively.
